A House Divided

Overview: After conducting an analysis of student needs and identifying the desired learning outcomes, scheduling for the lesson, and engaging the students, I utilized LovableAI to create a lesson in which students have conversations with historical figures about the causes of the Civil War. The Civil War and Reconstruction Era is covered at the end of the school year, and the unit starts during state testing. At this time, students are often tired, are required to do large amounts of reading and writing during state testing, and are looking forward to summer break, so the lesson must be unique and engaging. Due to these factors, my lesson needed to be direct, interactive, offer student choice, enable students to ask questions and receive answers verbally, and provide a transcript of the conversations to reference later in the unit. In addition, I wanted the lesson to be compatible with all of the students' devices, including their school-provided Chromebooks or their personal phones and tablets, so students could complete the task outside of class time. I researched the best tool and selected LoveableAI because it was highly rated, had an easy-to-use interface, and was free.

My Role: Researcher, Instructional Designer, Scriptwriter, Storyboard Designer

Tools Used: Loveable AI, Google Images, Chromebooks

Timeline: 4 hours

Training Type: 1-hour individual lesson

Client: Greene Middle School

Results:

  • I began by drafting a storyboard and identifying which historical figures I wanted the students to interview. I settled on 6 influential people, with varying opinions and backgrounds to align to state standards and provide full historical context. This took approximately 30 minutes.

  • Developing an AI prompt and exploring which program would best fit my needs was the most time-intensive. Eventually, I settled on LoveableAI because it most closely aligned with my storyboard. This portion took around 90 minutes.

  • Next came quality control, in which I checked the responses for accuracy, made modifications to the layout, explored the lesson on different devices, resolved tech issues, and made other revisions, which took 2 hours.

Next Steps: My next step would be to make the voices of the historical figures more realistic and natural. Since there are no voice recordings for any of the figures, this would have to be AI-generated, but perhaps I could use examples from the movie Lincoln to improve the quality.
